A lot of people have been asking me lately if I’m ready for Baby Lump’s arrival. I always get a little thrown off by the question – do they mean ready emotionally or ready materialistically?
Materialistically, James and I would definitely be able to get by if Baby Lump were to grace us with his/her presence tomorrow. For the most part, we have a lot of the essentials thanks to the baby shower in PA – a place for Baby Lump to sleep, a stroller, a carseat, some diapers, some clothes, bathing products, etc.
Answering whether I am emotionally ready is slightly more difficult. In some ways I think I am, and in others, maybe not so much. I think I’m teetering on the edge right now. I’m getting very excited for Baby Lump to finally be here, yet I’d be caught pretty off-guard if he/she were to show up in the next few days. Plus – we still need a boy’s name!
Still, the nesting instinct has definitely been catching up with me. I have such an urge to start getting the “nursery” ready, but right now it’s too busy serving as both James’ office and the guest room. Plus, we’re kind of lacking on the furniture front at the moment, so there wouldn’t be much I could do anyway. I was, however, able to convince James to help me set up the pack and play last night, which will serve as Baby Lump’s crib/changing area/play pen as long as we’re living in this apartment. It’s hanging out in our bedroom for the time being. I definitely swallowed a big, heaping dose of reality last night when I peered over at the pack and play from my bed and imagined the many times I’ll be hearing a baby’s cry coming from its general direction. Baby Lump could be here as early as next month and not be considered premature! (Crazy!)
I know I’m a little late posting this week, but here is a summary of Baby Lump’s 30-week stats:
Measurement/Weight: not much progress here – still about 3-4 lbs. and 15-16 inches
Other Highlights: Most of Baby Lump’s developemental energy this past week has been focused on rapid brain cell growth. Additionally, his/her fingernails and toenails are now fully formed, and he/she is starting to shed the lanugo (a fine layer of hair that has been covering the skin), which means Baby Lump is becoming less and less of a furbaby.

Okay – what is with the world’s fetish with the babies-as-food thing? This is even worse than the baby shower Cake Wrecks because now, actual humans are involved. Seriously, this makes me want to stop sharing those food analogies the sites I read use to describe my baby’s growing size. Baby Lump is getting too big to be compared to single servings of food anyway, unless I’m planning on chowing down on a whole meatloaf or something. Have a look, and see what I mean ….
My friend, Yianni is right – Martha should go back to jail for this one. Those poor babies. These are the cruelest baby costumes ever! There’s no way Baby Lump’s first Halloween will be spent as a lemon meringue pie or a boiled and plated lobster. That apple pie baby looks like she’s in a food coma. No wonder “Caesar salad baby” doesn’t want to cooperate …
In weekly updates, Baby Lump now weighs two full pounds and measures about 14 inches long (as long as he/she isn’t gearing up to be a Paul Bunyan-type baby). He/she has also started working on that birthday hairdo and should be growing some cute little baby fuzz by now.
According to many Web sites, this week marks the last week in my second trimester, so apparently I’m about two-thirds of the way there. Third trimester, here I come!

First of all, I’m glad to see some of you are really getting into the birth stats betting guessing facebook group. It’s been fun to track all of your (sometimes quirky) guesses. And while I doubt I’m going to give birth to a manbearpig (I guess this is what I get for the pambearpig nickname), a demigod or Paul Bunyan, I can see where you’re all coming from. Given that James was almost 11 pounds at birth, I suppose it’s not that far-fetched
Although it may not take five storks to drop off Baby Lump at my doorstep, he/she has done some growing in the past week. Little lump should now measure about 13 1/2 inches in length and weight approximately 1 1/2 pounds.
What’s even more intriguing is that his/her eyelids are no longer fused shut (not that Baby Lump can see anything in the darkness of the womb, anyway), and his/her lungs are now capable of breathing air! This means that although Baby Lump is taking in tiny breaths of fluid in the womb, he/she could now breathe outside the womb without medical assistance.
You may have noticed from my baby bump photos that I’ve decided to start taking pictures from a full-body perspective. Based on the fact that some of you have been questioning whether I’m actually taking photos of my knee and not my belly, I figured it was time for a change. I think you will all get a better idea of how big Baby Lump is getting from this perspective.
Maybe you’ll all also agree that Baby Lump is definitely not Paul Bunyan material.

I have to admit – when my friend, Keith first came to me with the idea of creating a facebook group for people to place bets on my baby-to-be’s birth stats, I was pretty hesitant. However, once I realized giving him the “okay” wouldn’t really mean I was pimping out my baby, I gave in. (Plus, he promised to put two dollars of every five-dollar bet toward a baby gift for Baby Lump. Hey, we’ll always need extra diapers, right?)
The “Pam and James Baby Betting Pool!! $5 Entry!” group has only been in existence for about 24 hours, but I’m already starting to notice the potential for how much fun it could be. It’s really interesting to see what people’s guesses are and wonder who will be correct (or closest to it). I’ve even started making an Excel spreadsheet of the first submissions (eh – you already knew I’m a geek). And after a chat with the group’s original creator, we’ve decided to change a few things …
In the spirit of the group, we’ve decided to eliminate monetary wagers. This was also decided after the realization that people probably won’t be sending me five-dollar bills in the mail. (Unfortunately, facebook is lame and doesn’t allow you to change the name of a group after it’s already been created, so don’t be deceived by the title.) Anyway, I figured more people would post their guesses on the wall if they didn’t think they had to contribute a few bucks, and I’m honestly just curious to see if anyone will guess the three stats dead-on. Which reminds me, guesses are to be made in the form of three categories:
- Sex/Flavor (you know – boy or girl)
- Date of Birth (Month/Date)
- Birth Weight (in pounds and ounces format)
The official rules are posted in the group’s description, including specifications for scoring and how the winner will be chosen. So please, join the group and place your bet guess! Just be careful not to guess the same as someone else!
While there may not be any monetary compensation for the winner, I already have a few ideas up my sleeve as far as prizes go.
And hey, even though we’ve gotten rid of the actual betting, if you’d still like to submit a five-dollar donation for the future purchase of diapers, by all means! )
I’ve decided to post an ongoing list of people’s guesses in a separate page on this blog called “Birth Stats,” which I will try to update regularly.
